On this episode of Balance Your Life, I am chatting with Amanda Keays from Keays2Wellness. Amanda is a registered Reiki Practitioner, Yoga Teacher, former fitness competitor, and intuitive medium. Amanda has a goal to reach out to people who are suffering like she did and guide them on their journey to wellness. Some of you may be familiar with a holistic approach to healing known as Reiki. If this is your first time hearing about it, well you've come to the right place! I've created this blog to help you understand what it is, how it works and what to expect from a session. This form of healing is used in various facilities from private businesses to Hospitals around the world. This isn't something new and we forget just how much our bodies have the power to heal themselves!

Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy.

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki Healers understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

A session is usually 60 to 90 minutes long. In your first Reiki session I want to create the most stress free environment for you. We will have a discussion so you are informed about what will take place and how you prefer the session to flow. The room will be blessed and cleansed of any negative energy before we begin. To enhance your experience I diffuse the air with therapeutic essential oils which have been studied on it's affects on relieving symptoms of stress. You will also get the opportunity to apply an essential oil of your choice before we begin.

After you get comfortable we will begin your journey with a meditation. For the actual session, the you will rest comfortably on a massage table on your back with shoes removed. Reiki can be performed sitting comfortably in a chair as well. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and you are always fully clothed; loose, comfortable clothing is suggested. A session can either be hands-on, where I will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where I will hold my hands slightly above your body. If you prefers not to be touched you can indicate this before we begin.

The session will then proceed moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person’s head or feet. A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. If you choose I can talk you through the session so you have a greater understanding of what is taking place. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.

WHAT YOU MIGHT FEEL DURING REIKI

As Reiki energies flow between the Healer and the recipient during the session, the two bodies may respond or react with particular sensations. You may feel heat, warmth, cold, pins-and-needles, tingling, vibrational buzzing, electric sparks, numbness, throbbing, itchiness or sleepiness. The fact that you can feel Reiki flowing, whether you are giving or receiving it, is verification that the energy is being welcomed.

During the treatment, you may feel Reiki sensations. My hands will often heat up as a result of the flow coursing through their palms. You may feel sleepy as incoming Reiki energies soothe and calm pent-up emotional tension and stress.

Some people are more in tune with their bodies than others and will be able to share fantastic stories about feeling the different sensations that occur while using Reiki. They will talk about experiencing imagery, kinesthesia, and/or inner voices while receiving Reiki.

You May Not Feel Anything
Reiki sensations can be very subtle and may be overlooked, but with continued practice most people will begin to notice even the slightest shifts of energy. A few people will seldom, if ever, feel anything with Reiki beyond the tactile sensation of hands-to-body touch. Fortunately, Reiki works whether you feel it or not.

Temperature Variations During a Reiki Treatment
For some Reiki Healers, hand temperature may change as they are giving Reiki treatments. These changes range from burning hot to icy cold. Sometimes, the perception of the temperature will be different for both of us. For instance, I may feel that I'm burning up, but you may feel coolness from the touch or vice versa.

Extra Healing Hands
Here is an experience that is not at all uncommon. Some Reiki recipients may feel that additional hands are participating in the session. For instance, one woman reported that during a one-on-one session, she had felt two additional pairs of hands placed upon her body. These hands are my spirit guides assisting in the healing process.

One possible explanation of the “extra healing hands” sensation according to some belief systems is that healing spirit guides are present…. Maureen J. Kelly, author of Reiki and the Healing Buddha, says the sensations of the hands that Reiki practitioners experience can be explained by the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang. If the practitioner’s hands are hot, it indicates the recipient’s body has too much yang energy. If the hands are cold, the body has too much yin energy.

Byosen Reikan Ho
Byosen Reikan Ho is a scanning technique that is done before and after a Reiki session. My hands move over your body without touching you, to detect dis-eases and imbalances. This technique can be used to detect and treat dis-ease that has not yet manifested in the body. It is also used to treat residual toxins from past illnesses as a preventative measure against re-occurrence. Byosen Reikan Ho is not a diagnostic procedure, but a technique performed to locate and treat illness.

HOW MANY REIKI SESSIONS DO I NEED?

It's generally best to receive three to five Reiki treatments one to two weeks apart. Once you see yourself improving you can space out treatments to one month or six weeks apart. Receiving regular Reiki treatments is excellent self-care and helps you to maintian holistic balance.

I want to empower you in your own health and healing. This is why simple take home tips are included in your Reiki session. Depending on why you make time for a Reiki treatment, these may include:

deep breathing techniques
meditation techniques
self-care tips
stretching and strengthening exercises

Allowing at least a week in between each of your Reiki treatments creates space for you to consciously and subconsciously process the treatment. Reiki continues to work through you after the treatment session. The wonderful effects of the treatment continue to intergate into your being days after your session.

Here is a general guideline to help you determine how many Reiki treatments you will need:
If you are wanting to work on specific condition such as:

anxiety
headaches
depression
neck, shoulder or lower back pain
grief
an autoimmune condition
fertility challenges
life direction and purpose
P.M.T.

What is the Third Eye
The third eye can be found in information from ancient days in many cultures. The third eye refers to the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. In New Age spirituality, the third eye often symbolizes a state of enlightenment or the evocation of mental images having deeply personal spiritual or psychological significance. The third eye is often associated with religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras and auras, precognition, and out-of-body experiences. People who are claimed to have the capacity to utilize their third eyes are sometimes known as seers. In Hinduism, the third eye is said to be located around the middle of the forehead, slightly above the junction of the eyebrows.(1)

So you’ve seen the movie Ghostbusters and feel pretty confident in your paranormal investigative skills, right? ? Well it’s not as Hollywood as you may think and I felt compelled to drop some paranormal wisdom on you lovely ladies and gents!

I grew up watching spooky ghost movies just like you, however its not quite the same as depicted on screen. Most of you may not realize that you currently have some unwanted visitors in your home. Do you ever feel like you just can’t relax or sleep because you feel unsettled in your home? It also doesn’t have to be a home because paranormal energy/ghosts/spirits can roam anywhere. Other factors of not feeling at peace in your home may be from negative energy left behind by former owners or even from you. You may just need to do a cleansing or blessing of your space.

Did you ever have to come out of the closet...as a Ghostbuster?
Different right? I created this blog to open the minds and souls of those who are curious about the day in the life of someone who..."SEES DEAD PEOPLE" and other spiritual abilities. You see I've always dealt with awkward situations with humour and really, our time on earth is too short to be serious all the time!

So where do I start?
At the age of 4 years old my parents noticed something was different. However previous to the popularity of mainstream paranormal investigation reality TV, it was frowned upon. So I tried to hide it away until I was 19 years old and a tragic event caused me to recognize who I really was. I will discuss my first experience in another blog so stay tuned!
